FAQ about portrait lenses for photography
What lens focal length is best for portrait photography?
For portrait photography, lenses with a focal length of around 85 mm to 135 mm are generally considered ideal. These focal lengths create a natural perspective and avoid facial distortion that can occur when using wide-angle lenses.
When combined with a wide aperture (for example, f/1.4 or f/1.8), they also produce a soft blurred background (bokeh), helping the subject stand out clearly from the background.
Why are sharpness and detail important in a portrait lens?
A high-quality portrait lens should deliver excellent sharpness and detail, especially around the eyes. In portrait photography, the viewer’s attention is usually drawn to the eyes, so eyelashes, skin texture and facial details should appear clear and precise.
Strong optical performance ensures portraits look professional and retain fine details even in high-resolution images.
Do portrait lenses need image stabilisation?
Portrait photos are often taken handheld. A common rule of thumb is that the minimum shutter speed should be roughly equal to the focal length being used.
- 85 mm → about 1/80 second
- 100 mm → about 1/100 second
In practice, many photographers use even faster shutter speeds up to 1/500 second to freeze small movements from the subject. Under these conditions, image stabilisation is usually not necessary.
Do I need additional accessories for portrait photography with Kase lenses?
No additional equipment is required to use Kase portrait lenses. However, photographers who want softer skin tones and a cinematic glow effect may optionally use a Black Mist filter. This filter diffuses light slightly and gives portraits a soft, atmospheric look.
Kase lenses also feature a magnetic filter thread, allowing compatible Kase filters to be attached quickly without the need for adapters.
