Main features of Kase medium GND filters
Medium graduated ND filters designed by Kase are perfect for capturing images with “difficult” composition when you need a flexible solution in between soft and hard GND filters. Medium GND filters have a transition harder than soft grad filters but less than hard graduated filters.
The main benefits of Kase GND filters:
- Excellent colour neutrality
- Oil- and water-repellent coating
- Shock-resistant optical glass
- Easy to clean
What is a medium GND filter?
A medium graduated neutral density filter (medium GND filter) is a type of gradient filter used in landscape photography to control and balance the light in the scene without affecting the colours. These filters come as a solution in between soft and hard GND filters and are effective in situations when the horizon is broken or uneven.
How does a medium graduated ND filter work?
Once placed over the horizon, the medium-edge GND filter covers the bright area on top of the image while the bottom part of the scene remains not affected. The horizon is covered with the gradient but due to the medium transition objects crossing the horizon do not appear underexposed. Therefore, this type of gradient allows for balanced exposure and maintains the detail of the landscape with uneven horizons without compromise.
When should I use a medium GND filter?
The main purpose of this filter is to balance the exposure between two parts of the image when there is a moderate difference in brightness. Practically, a medium GND filter is used to darken the sky which is considerably brighter when the horizon line is not straight but has some objects protruding into the sky. If you have a landscape with hills, mountains or a cityscape with buildings, a medium GND filter is the right choice, since you won’t have to worry about a visible line cutting the horizon.
What focal length should I use medium GND filters for?
The best focal length to use a medium graduated ND filter for is 35mm to 50mm. Additionally, if you are taking shots where there is a significant difference in brightness between the foreground and sky, using a medium GND filter will help you balance out your exposure.
