What is a soft GND filter?

A soft graduated neutral density (GND) filter is a type of filter that has a gradient with a smooth transition between dark and clear parts. Compared to the hard and medium GND filters, soft filters do not have such a definite transition line in the middle.

Soft GND filters are commonly used in landscape photography to darken the sky while keeping the land or foreground properly exposed. The soft transition allows for a smoother and more natural blending of light in the scene.

When to use soft graduated ND filters?

Soft GND filters are used to balance exposure in the scenes with a gradual transition between the brighter and darker areas. Considering that the soft graduated ND filter has a smooth gradual gradient, it is ideal for those situations when the horizon is not straight or there are objects encroaching on the horizon line (e.g., mountains, buildings, trees). For example, when you have mountain peaks appearing against the sky, using a soft GND filter will help to maintain detail in the mountains while preventing the sky from getting overexposed.

Do soft GND filters affect image quality or colours?

Kase soft grad filters are made of high-quality materials which allows maintenance of the image quality and original colours. Every filter has an optical glass and multiple nano-coating to reduce reflections and flares. Our GND filters are colour-neutral and do not affect colours and tones of the image.
