Johannes Kowalewski – Professional photographer in Germany

Hi, I’m Johannes Kowalewski, a landscape photographer based in Schleswig-Holstein.

I first got into photography in 2017, inspired by my long-distance hike through New Zealand on the Te Araroa Trail. What started as a personal project for friends and family quickly turned into a deep passion.

The breathtaking landscapes of New Zealand ignited many more exciting photographic adventures. Now, I spend much of my time in nature, capturing the diverse scenery of northern Germany. From the Lüneburg Heath to the North Sea, I also often venture to Madeira and the rugged coasts of Scandinavia.

While I initially focused on classic, wide-angle landscape photography, I’ve increasingly been drawn to abstract scenes and small details. My work is intentionally unspecific in location, allowing the images to feel universal—capturing striking and expressive moments far from famous landmarks.

For me, landscape photography revolves around three key aspects: first, finding the perfect motif in nature; second, waiting for the right weather and external conditions to stage it perfectly (sometimes for months, returning to the location several times); and finally, printing the photos. There’s nothing quite like holding your work in your hands and seeing it displayed on a wall.
