Dean's journey and philosophy of photography

Dean's deep connection to nature and the countryside began on a farm nestled near the mountains of New Zealand's North Island.

He discovered photography at 15 and taught himself how to develop film. After school, he worked as an assistant to a photographer for a small-town newspaper. The photographer gave him the chance to handle half of the assignments, allowing him to unravel the mysteries of both the camera and the deeper philosophy behind photography.

While studying biochemistry and genetics at the University of Auckland, Dean failed an exam. When his professor questioned him, Dean explained that he had been consumed for days and nights by an exhibition. The professor asked to see his work, leading to a pivotal moment: a commission from New Zealand Geographic magazine. From there, Dean's career took off—more commissions, exhibitions, and print sales followed. Along the way, he met several world-renowned photographers who inspired him to delve into documentary photography. This drive led him to explore cities like Tokyo and New York before settling in Germany.

After years of documenting the changes in Leipzig post-reunification, Dean faced a setback when his beloved film camera equipment was stolen. This forced him to transition to digital photography, opening a whole new world of creative possibilities. Today, Dean works with photo libraries, magazines, calendars, and art collections, embracing the endless opportunities digital photography and software provide. His passion has also led him to experiment with long exposure and astrophotography.

His love for nature and the pursuit of perfect images remain as strong as ever. Through his photography, Dean aims to convey a message that stirs emotions. In his own words, "Truth and beauty are subjective, but the medium is the message."
