Why do I use an ND filter on my mobile phone?

ND filters, neutral density filters or grey filters, are often used by professional photographers to ensure even lighting. This is an optical glass lens tinted a light shade of grey that can be screwed, magnetically attached, or snapped in front of the lens. With such a neutral-density filter, you can take very good photos, regardless of the bright light.

Another reason for using smartphone ND filters is to create a surreal image effect due to the increased exposure time. As a result, movements can be "frozen" and so-called flowing movements, such as water flow, cloud movements or moving cars in a big city, can be shot with a motion blur effect.

How does an ND filter work?

In fact, an ND filter is nothing more than sunglasses for your mobile phone camera and lets less light enter the lens. This reduces the amount of light hitting the sensor and artificially extends the camera's exposure time by a fixed factor.

Even though ND filters appear grey or black, the colors and sharpness of the images are not affected. Just like the polarizing filter, the effect of an ND filter cannot be digitally reproduced.

How to mount an ND filter on an iPhone?

Mounting an ND filter on your iPhone is a simple process. Follow these steps:

Clean your iPhone's lens: a clean lens ensures a clear and sharp image.
Attach the magnetic filter.

If your case doesn't have a built-in magnetic attachment, you can use adhesive magnetic strips that are often included with magnetic filter kits. Attach the magnetic frame to your case or directly to the phone around the lens and then attach the filter.

How to choose an ND Filter for your smartphone

Filter density (ND value):

ND filters come in various densities, usually expressed as ND4, ND8, ND16, ND64 etc. The higher the number, the greater the reduction in light. To choose the right density, consider the shooting conditions. A lower density (e.g., ND2 or ND4) is suitable for slightly reducing light, while a higher density (e.g., ND512 or ND100) is ideal for extremely bright conditions or long-exposure shots.

Filter size:

Ensure that the filter you choose is compatible with your smartphone's camera lens. You can see which mobile phone models the ND filter can be used for in the product description.
